Neither immune nor perfect: Understanding the mind doesn’t free us from our own.
Actualizado: 24 sept
Studying the human mind doesn’t mean being able to solve everything perfectly or always feeling balanced. It means, rather, being committed to the ongoing process of understanding the human mind — including our own — and approaching that process with humility. Those of us who spend time trying to understand suffering, behaviour or emotions are not immune to them. Theory doesn’t protect us from vulnerability; if anything, it often makes us more aware of it.
“All that psychology, and you still can’t apply it to yourself.” Exactly. Psychological knowledge doesn’t erase biology. Our brain is still a human organ, with its biases, emotional memory, reward and stress circuits, and an amygdala that can react before reason has a chance to step in. We can understand the mechanisms behind distress and still experience it. We can know the steps to regulate an emotion and still not be able to do it every single time.
Consistency isn’t perfection. It’s an ongoing dialogue between what we know and what we live. Learning psychology is also an imperfect journey of self-discovery: we explore theories because we are looking for tools, not because we already have them all. And every personal difficulty doesn’t invalidate what we’ve learnt; it enriches it. It reminds us that mental health isn’t a destination we eventually reach, but a dynamic balance between our neural networks, our environment and our emotional experiences.
So no, it isn’t hypocrisy. It’s being human. It’s recognising that even when we understand how the mind works, we are still living with our own. And that the value of studying psychology isn’t in always having the right answer, but in continuing to explore how, together with others, we can build fuller lives — even when our own feels unsteady.
Yes, I study psychology. No, I don’t have everything figured out. But I do share the small grains of sand and little pieces of light I gather along the way — through every stumble, and through everything I learn.

Es reconocer que incluso sabiendo cómo funciona la mente, no nos libramos de la nuestra. 💣
