Bare. Feeling MORE doesn’t mean feeling TOO MUCH.

Today, there is a lot of talk about highly sensitive people (HSPs). They are classified, categorised, labelled. But perhaps the name is the least important part. Because beyond all the categories, the truth is that some people perceive a little more than what is immediately visible.

From neuroscience, we know that these people have a more responsive nervous system: areas of the brain associated with empathy, emotional awareness and sensory processing — such as the insula and the amygdala — show greater activation. It isn’t necessarily that they “feel more” intensely, but that they pick up on more nuances, more information. Their perception is finer, richer, more complex.

Being highly sensitive doesn’t mean living in a constant emotional whirlwind. It doesn’t mean exaggerating what you feel. Perhaps it means having the ability to perceive things a little closer to how they really are. That sensitivity doesn’t distort reality: it expands it. Where others see a gesture, a word, a pause… a sensitive person notices the emotion behind it, the invisible nuance that reveals authenticity or inconsistency.

And sometimes, that can be frightening. Frightening for those around you, because you don’t just notice when someone is lying to you — you also notice when they are lying to themselves. It can unsettle those who aren’t ready to be seen without their masks.

Living with high sensitivity and having the courage not to silence what you feel — not with drugs, food or distractions — is an act of courage. It isn’t easy. It means standing bare before yourself, and sometimes it hurts. A lot. But within that same pain, a path towards deep, almost brutal self-knowledge begins to open — one that confronts you with who you are and with everything you still don’t know how to hold. If you choose to walk that path with a desire to cultivate your spirituality and emotional intelligence, that sensitivity stops being a burden and becomes a teacher: it teaches you to be present, to feel yourself and to understand the world with greater honesty.

Stay close to those who embrace that sensitivity, who understand it, value it and care for it. Those who recognise it as a form of wisdom rather than a weakness. And calmly but firmly, step away from those who use that part of you to invalidate you, manipulate you or make you doubt yourself. Not everyone will understand the way you feel, but that doesn’t mean you should hide it.

No, being highly sensitive doesn’t mean you feel everything “too much”. It means you experience life with a fullness that others may only glimpse. And when you learn to inhabit that fullness without fear, sensitivity stops being a wound:

IT BECOMES A GIFT.
